Bulgaria’s path to democracy and free market economy after the collapse of the authoritarian rule could have been shorter, but nevertheless we are heading in the right direction. Bulgaria is developing and modernizing. This is what Head of State Rosen Plevneliev said before the nearly 150 representatives of the Bulgarian community in Argentina. The Head of State arrived on his official visit in Buenos Aires, where he will meet the country’s president Mauricio Macri and representatives of the business circles in Argentina.

The Bulgarian President’s visit is taking place in the context of the 85th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Argentina.  This is the first visit of the president of an EU member state after Mauricio Macri was elected president of Argentina.

In his speech before our compatriots, President Rosen Plevneliev highlighted four major achievements that Bulgaria has made in the past 25 years – the evolution of parliamentary democracy in Bulgaria, the country’s accession to the EU and NATO, and the opportunities for the Bulgarian nationals to travel freely across Europe and throughout the world.

The Head of State expressed his gratitude to the Bulgarians living in Argentina for their safeguarding of the Bulgarian traditions and for their active engagement in enlightening and educational activities driven by patriotism. He reassured that the presidential institution had taken on the commitment to tackle the problems of our compatriots living abroad and will continue its support for every patriotic initiative they undertake. Bulgarians from the provinces of Chako, Patagonia, Kordova,  Buenos Aires had come to attend the meeting with President Rosen Plevneliev. According to the data provided by the organizations of the Bulgarian community in Argentina, our compatriots and their descendants living in Argentina are more than 14 000 people in number.
