Judge us by what we do, and if the results are good, spread the word, President Rosen Plevneliev told representatives of the Bulgarian community in Seattle in an address last night at the Pacific Institute. At a meeting with Bulgarians working in large US companies in the region, President Plevneliev urged them to promote Bulgaria’s success. Our compatriots abroad very clearly see the priorities and already know what to ask politicians in Bulgaria, he said, and declared “a new kind of politics, where promises are kept”. He said that this would stimulate civic energy and contribute to a stronger society, with institutions that work and are responsible.

On the second day of his visit to the US, the President met in Seattle with a number of representatives of American business
In times of crisis, everyone in the world talks about growth, about cuts in public spending, but growth cannot be achieved without hard work and structural reform, and Bulgaria does just that. This was President Rosen Plevneliev’s message to representatives of American business, at a breakfast meeting in Seattle on the theme of “The US and Bulgaria: Building bridges through business”.

The first official visit by President Rosen Plevneliev to the United States began with a meeting in Seattle with Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. At the meeting, it was emphasised that innovation and development of industries with high added value is the future of Bulgaria, and the country is in a very good position with its macro-economic performance and research potential.

President Rosen Plevneliev met UNICEF Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and CIS Marie-Pierre Poirier. The main topics of discussion were state policy on child protection and the need for investment in support of early childhood development. Politicians should not just spend public funds but should invest them with a targeted and long-term view on returns, the President said during the meeting.

Economic growth cannot be bought with debt, but must be developed, President Rosen Plevneliev said today in a speech to students at Sofia University. Together with the European Commissioner for International Co-operation, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response Kristalina Georgieva, the President opened a public discussion on “Has the European project drained away?”, held on the occasion of May 9, Europe Day.
