The President receives OECD Secretary-General

Bulgaria views OECD membership as a strategic priority. This is what President Rumen Radev said after a session with the Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Matthias Cormann. The meeting took place just a few months after this country had received a roadmap for OECD accession adopted by the OECD Council.

The OECD membership will enable Bulgaria to implement important reforms that will help modernise the country and create a better business climate, increased investor confidence, accelerated economic growth and job openings, Radev added. In his words, the OECD accession will also create a new working environment for the institutions in Bulgaria and will encourage the achievement of higher standards, respect for the rule of law and effective functioning of the judiciary.

The head of State congratulated the caretaker government for the hard work and good cooperation with the OECD experts, thanks to which the initial OECD accession memorandum was finalised. The document is to be approved by the Council of Ministers and sent to the Organisation.  The real part of the accession talks is to follow - in-depth technical reviews that will help identify areas and measures for improving our legislation, policies and practices, the President further said.

OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann praised Bulgaria's efforts during the accession process and stressed that the cooperation with Bulgaria is positive and constructive. He expressed confidence that the OECD membership could contribute to the process of implementing important reforms in Bulgaria.

Cormann is in Sofia to attend the foreign ministerial of the Central European Initiative member states, which Bulgaria chairs this year.
