Radev and Iohannis discuss measures to prevent the war in Ukraine from leading to a food and humanitarian crisis

2022-04-20 18:50:00

Preserving the potential of transport corridors in Eastern Europe and taking measures to prevent the war in Ukraine from leading to a humanitarian crisis in the country and the EU's neighbouring regions were some of the topics discussed in a telephone conversation between Presidents Rumen Radev of Bulgaria and Klaus Iohannis of Romania. Ukraine is one of Europe's largest exporters of cereals and the blocking of its ports is hampering exports, which creates the risk of a food crisis in a number of countries, it was stressed during the conversation.

The sides shared the view that EU countries should pool their efforts to provide assistance to the millions of refugees from the hostilities. Avoiding a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine also requires creating the conditions for the continuation of humanitarian support and the import of essential commodities, it was further pointed out during the talk.

President Radev extended an invitation to his Romanian counterpart to visit this country at a time convenient for him.
