President Rumen Radev: Bulgaria Will Continue to Support the Scientific Programs of CERN

2017-03-23 19:20:00

Bulgaria will continue to support the scientific programs of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), which lead to return on investments for our country not only through the technological transfer made, but also through the training of a lot of Bulgarian scholars. This is what President Rumen Radev said at a meeting with Fabiola Gianotti, Director General of CERN. Education and Science Minister Professor Nikolay Denkov and Associate Professor Leander Litov from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” took part in the meeting.

CERN is ready to support the establishment of a center for hadron therapy for the treatment of oncological diseases in Bulgaria, Fabiola Gianotti said. In the opinion of scholars, the establishment of such a center will make our country a leading factor in Southeast Europe not only in the treatment of cancer, but will also make our country a center for the training and research for creating new detectors for medical accelerators.

The establishment of an incubator for start-ups in Bulgaria, which will use new technologies and innovations developed in the Organization for Nuclear Research, was also discussed at the meeting. The importance of uniting the scientific expertise and experience in the development of information technologies, bioinformatics and the creation of new medical equipment was also highlighted.

Fabiola Gianotti highly appreciated the Bulgarian specialists’ contribution to the work of CERN, as well as the training programs which more than 2,000 Bulgarian students and 500 high school teachers have taken part in.
