The Presidents of Bulgaria and Malta Called on for More Compassion for the Countries the Migration Flow Passes Through

2016-04-05 12:57:00

The European Union should show more compassion to the problems the countries through which the migration flow passes are facing and should support them. This was the position shared by Head of State Rosen Plevneliev and President of Malta Mary-Louise Coleiro Preca, who held talks at 2 Dondukov street today. The two were unanimous that the EU should strengthen its support also for settling the conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa and promote economic growth in the countries the migrants come from.

“Under conditions of crisis we should prove that the EU member states can unite and act together. This is the only way we can restore the trust in united Europe,” President Plevneliev emphasized.  The two shared the opinion that the topic of the migration flows should not be allowed to divide Europe and be used by populist and xenophobic parties.

Coping with the migration pressure, promoting economic growth and also the process of EU enlargement will be in the focus of the forthcoming EU presidencies, of Malta in 2017 and Bulgaria in 2018 and the two countries will strengthen their partnership in this direction, it emerged at the meeting. The Bulgarian Head of State said that the support for the European prospects of the Western Balkan countries is important for ensuring stability not only in Southeast Europe, but also in the EU.

At the meeting President Rosen Plevneliev invited President Mary-Louise Coleiro Preca to take part in the forthcoming meeting of the head of states of Arraiolos group, which Bulgaria will host in September 2016.
