President Plevneliev: Bulgaria Will Be Given Control of a Strong Sector and Will Have a Worthy Representation in the European Commission

2014-08-30 19:20:00
Bulgaria will be given control of a strong sector and will have a much more brilliant and worthy representation in the next European Commission, no matter what happens at the debates to be held at the extraordinary meeting of the European Council today. This is what President Rosen Plevneliev told journalists in Brussels before the beginning of the meeting.

“We have done a lot of work in the past couple of months – the Bulgarian foreign policy, as well as all institutions have put in a lot of efforts and I am happy that we raised the standard so high that today Mrs. Georgieva is one of the three nominees for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy,” the President said and added that this very fact is a great success.

“Today we will seek consensus, we have a worthy nominee, the other nominees are also worthy.  It is very important for our country to realize that no matter what happens after the debates are held, Bulgaria will be given control of a strong sector and will have a much more brilliant and worthy representation in the next European Commission and I am sure that the debates to be held this evening and also in the following days will lead to a great success for Bulgaria,” the Head of State further said.

“As a president who is aware how important it is for us to be united and to have a powerful voice at a time which is very difficult for Europe, I have come not only with a strong nominee, but also with the hope that a European consensus will be reached on the topics which are important for the next European Commission – that it should be well constructed and enjoy a great political trust,” Rosen Plevneliev said.

In reply to a question regarding possible new sanctions against Russia, the President said that the Union should show resolution so as to avoid a further escalation of the conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian crisis is undoubtedly the greatest challenge Europe is facing after World War II,” the President said.  He pointed out that a political solution to the conflict must be sought.

“At this moment we must show resolution, we must have a clear and adamant position. Russia’s actions are unacceptable, we should ensure that Russia gets back to the negotiating table,’ the President said.
