Rosen Plevneliev: Bulgaria should adopt a unified position regarding the crisis in Syria

2013-09-11 12:55:00

Although today there are still different interpretations of the attitude of Bulgarian politicians to the crisis in Syria, there should be a unified position in Bulgaria on this issue. Such a position can be shaped in Parliament. This is what President Rosen Plevneliev told journalists today, after he opened the 11th international conference “Security in South-East Europe – seeking intelligent solutions” in the Congress center of the Inter Expo Center in Sofia. The Head of State commented that he would continue working to secure that a unified position of our country is adopted and that this will happen before he takes part in the UN General Assembly meeting.  “I am sure that a common position of the president and government will be adopted next week,” Rosen Plevneliev said.

The Head of State was adamant that our country shares the EU position adopted in Vilnius whereby the Union insists for a “clear and decisive response” to the use of chemical weapons against civilians in Syria.

The President reiterated his support for the government’s prompt reaction whereby the Security Council at the Prime Minister’s Office was convened to handle the refugee flow of Syrian citizens to Bulgaria.  “Although this is not an easy problem to solve because it finds us relatively unprepared, I believe that we are on the correct way,” Rosen Plevneliev commented. The Head of State also emphasized that the situation created by the crisis in Syria is highly dynamic.  “I keep a close track of the situation and I will convene a Consultative Council for National Security when I consider that this serves the nation’s interests,” Rosen Plevneliev was adamant.

In reply to a question, the President emphasized that the Bulgarian services have won the trust of their international partners. Rosen Plevneliev pointed out that in the one-year period after the terror act in Sarafovo, the security services have gained experience in their cooperation with their counterparts from the United States, Canada, Israel, the Federal Republic of Germany and Great Britain and have achieved concrete results in the investigation of the terror act. “The preparation for raising charges against the perpetrators is in its final stage,” the Head of State said.
