President Plevneliev in Brussels: the European leaders should not resolve domestic policy problems by offering Bulgaria as a convenient excuse

2013-03-14 18:20:00

The caretaker government, with its expert potential and positions, has gained the trust of the European institutions, President Rosen Plevneliev told journalists in Brussels before the summit of the European Council, which will be held this evening in the Belgian capital. The head of state emphasized once again that in the transition period in the run-up to the early general election the president’s office will continue to be the institution that guarantees stability and continuity in Bulgaria’s governance.

Rosen Plevneliev was adamant that a balance between the requirement for the EU member states to show fiscal discipline and the policies ensuring growth should be achieved at the European Council summit. In his words, the leaders will pay special attention to the problems of youth unemployment.

The EU member states have no reasons to worry that Bulgaria will start “social tourism”, the head of state commented in response to a journalist’s question.  “There is no information to prove such allegations,” the president said and called on the European leaders “to avoid resolving their domestic policy problems by offering Bulgaria as a convenient excuse.”

The President arrived in Brussels to take part in the European Council meeting. The state and government leaders will assess the overall progress made by member states in implementing the 2012 country-specific recommendations and adopt strategic advice and guidelines for member states. The European Council will also provide guidance to member states on the 2013 Stability and Convergence programmes, and on the implementation of Europe 2020 “flagship initiatives”.
