President Plevneliev: The referendum was a chance for politicians to hear the voice of the citizens, not to extract political dividends

In the referendum, politicians should have heard the voice of the citizens, and not explained against whom the referendum was directed. This was President Rosen Plevneliev’s comment to journalists in Paris. Speaking to Bulgarian journalists in the French capital, the President was adamant the results of the public consultation should not be politicised. “It is true that voter turnout could have been higher, but it is also true that a section of the voters did not come out to vote because this referendum was unnecessarily politicised,” the President said.
The President reiterated that political parties should focus on the correct information for society, and let people make their own choices about the future of nuclear energy in Bulgaria. “In spite of the low voter turnout, I am adamant – this referendum is a great success for democracy and for civil society in Bulgaria and is the beginning of a change,” the President said.
