Competition for the 2013 John Atanasoff Award and Prizes given annually by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria launched today

Today, April 4th, begins the 11th edition of the John Atanasoff Award and John Atanasoff Prizes competition. The Award and Prizes, given by the President of the Republic, support young scientists, researchers and developers working in the fields of information and communication technologies.
 
This year five laureats will be distinguished in the following categories:
 
  • Leading category: John Atanasoff Award for scientific break-troughs achieved by a promising young researcher in the field of information and communication technologies
  • An applied category: the John Atanasoff Prize for Implementing Scientific Breakthroughs and the John Atanasoff Prize for Projects with Significant Social Impact, and 
  • A students’ and teachers category: the John Atanasoff Students and Their Teachers Prizes for the students with the highest achievements in the annual series of international student competitions, respectively in informatics and information and communication technology, and the teachers who tutored them.
 
The awarding ceremony for the John Atanasoff Laureats this year will coincide with the 110th anniversary of Dr. John V. Atanasoff’ birth on October 4th 2013. A number of events organized by the President’s Administration in collaboration with the Technical University of Sofia, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), the Federation of Scientific Unions, Sofia Tech Park, BAIT, BASSCOM, ICT Cluster and ICT Media will mark the anniversary of the great inventor of Bulgarian descent. A comprehensive events program will be published in September 2013.
 
In 2012, the John Atanasoff Laureats included the Harvard University alumnus and author of two patents in the field of cryptography - Dr. Dimitar Zhechev, the Doctor of Applied Biophysics at Stanford University - Ivan Dimov, the BASComputational Linguistics Ph.D. fellow Ivelina Stoyanova and the students Jordan Chaparova and Dimitar Vuldzhev as well as their teachers Russo Shikov Anton Shikov, Miroslav Sredkov, Nikolina Nikolova, Diana Popova and Konstantin Delchev.
 
Documents for the 2013 edition of the awards will be accepted until August 4th, 2013 at nagradajohnatanasoff@president.bg. The competition rules and selection criteria for each award category can be found here. Applicants will be evaluated by an Election Committee composed of leading researchers, practitioners and entrepreneurs in the field of information and communication technologies.
