Achieving peace in the region is key to connectivity and multilateral economic cooperation in the Black Sea. This is what President Rumen Radev said at a meeting today with the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC), Asaf Hajiyev, who is visiting Bulgaria. PABSEC is the parliamentary dimension of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organisation, of which our country is a founding member. 

 

Rumen Radev and Asaf Hajiyev noted the strategic importance of the Black Sea as a bridge between Europe and Asia for the development of transport and energy connectivity. In this regard, the Head of State highlighted our country's place as a reliable factor for diversification of the sources and routes for the transmission of energy resources through the gas interconnector between Greece and Bulgaria. They also discussed the prospects for the implementation of other energy projects in the region, which will contribute to deepening connectivity.     

 

The PABSEC Secretary General highly appreciated Bulgaria's role as an active member of the Assembly and in the implementation of the common priorities. The assumption of the rotating presidency of PABSEC by the Bulgarian Parliament in the period July - December this year was also discussed during the talks. Statement by Head of State Iliana Iotova

For projects aimed at improving connectivity between Bulgaria and Turkiye must be viewed as a whole, to be successful, and within the context of closer cooperation in Southeastern Europe. This will bolster both economic development and security in the region, whose strategic importance is growing. This was stated by President Iliana Iotova at a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who is on a formal visit to Bulgaria.

Albulena Haxhiu expressed her gratitude to President Iotova for Bulgaria’s support on Kosovo’s path toward membership in NATO and the European Union.

Iliana Iotova raised the issue of depopulation in the area along the Bulgarian-Serbian border and highlighted the need for investment to counter the adverse demographic trend.
