Your visit is a boost for the deepening of cooperation in education between Bulgaria and Portugal. With these words, the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Prof Luís Ferreira, welcomed the Vice President Iliana Iotova. The meeting was also attended by Prof Hermenegildo Fernandes, Dean of the Faculty of Philology.

The largest university in Portugal has 52 thousand students, 20 thousand of whom are foreign. Prof Ferreira expressed gratitude for the good cooperation with Bulgaria. The University of Lisbon has a lectureship in Bulgarian language and culture, and the director of the Centre for Slavic Languages and Cultures at the Faculty of Philology is Bulgarian - prof. Georgi Hristovski.

The Vice President emphasised the strong tradition in Bulgaria of studying Portuguese in secondary schools and Universities. She also highlighted the active work of the Camoes Institute for Portuguese Language and Culture. Iotova pointed out that opportunities for student exchange under European programmes and membership in the European University Network should be used to the maximum.

The Vice President invited the Dean of the Faculty of Philology, who is a specialist in medieval history, to visit Bulgaria. Bulgaria has many significant archaeological sites. You should definitely visit Veliki Preslav, where the Golden Age of Bulgaria developed. In my country, the third Christian civilisation was born - the Slavic one, Iliana Iotova said.

The Vice President is in Lisbon to participate in the forum "Innovative methods and materials for teaching Bulgarian history and geography in Bulgarian schools abroad," which is held under her patronage.
