In a telephone conversation with the President of the European Council Charles Michel, Head of State Rumen Radev called for adopting an operational action plan regarding the migration pressure towards the land EU borders. In the President’s words, the protection of the external land EU borders is of key importance for guaranteeing the security of the European citizens and avoiding crises inside the Union.

The two discussed the escalation of tension in the Middle East region, which poses risks to the security in the EU and may unleash a new refugee wave.

President Radev called for a timely meeting of the European Council, where these issues can be discussed. Rumen Radev also recalled that he tabled a proposal for working out a common European operational plan for protecting the land EU borders in the event of a sharp increase of the migration pressure back in the spring of 2017, while he was representing our country at the meetings of the European Council.

The Bulgarian Head of State discussed the increased migration pressure also with Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and highlighted the necessity for a stronger support of the EU for Greece and Bulgaria for protecting the external EU borders.
