President Rumen Radev Took Part in the Solemn Opening of the General Debate of the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly

2019-09-24 18:44:00

The expectations from the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly are that considerable progress will be achieved towards the prevention and the handling of conflicts and strengthening the common security in the world. Yet in real life such expectations are hard to meet. This is what President Rumen Radev told journalists. The Head of State took part in the solemn opening of the session. It began with a welcoming speech delivered by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, addressing all heads of state and leaders of government.

The President said that the most important condition for guaranteeing stability and resolving conflicts is engaging in a dialogue and a direct communication between the state leaders and the UN. This year the topic of the session is directed also towards intensifying the multilateral efforts to eradicate poverty, which lies at the basis of a lot of conflicts, towards increasing the quality of education, towards fighting climate change and towards social inclusion.

Taking a question concerning the sharpened rhetoric and the security environment in the Persian Gulf, the Head of State voiced hope that the proposals made by Iran’s president for de-escalation and the visions that the USA and the other partners have will bring about an effective easing of tension and the avoidance of a new potential conflict in the Middle East.

Asked to comment the calls of political leaders for signing a new nuclear agreement with Iran, the President said that the EU has already expressed its position with the Joint Action Plan on Iran’s nuclear program and it should be fulfilled. In the Head of State’s words, if this plan is neglected, this will mean that we go back to the starting point and head towards a speedy and dangerous course of nuclear armament in the Middle East region.

The Republic of North Macedonia should not forget that it is a candidate country for EU membership and cannot set conditions for member states. Nor can it revise international treaties, because this 'brands' the country as a state that does not respect international law. This is what Head of State Rumen Radev told the media in Burgas when asked to comment on the once again exacerbated rhetoric in Skopje regarding Bulgaria.
