Rumen Radev and Antonio Guterres: the Retreat from Multilateral Diplomacy Generates Instability and Crises

2019-06-07 13:10:00

The retreat from multilateral diplomacy threatens security and stability and is a condition for generating crises. This was the common stance shared by Head of State Rumen Radev and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who held a meeting today within the international economic forum in St. Petersburg. The two were unanimous that climate change, the fight against terrorism and sustainable development require joint efforts and a common approach by the UN member states.

“Bulgaria highly appreciates and supports the efforts for reform, which will result in a more efficient and viable UN,” Rumen Radev said. The Head of State called on the UN to use to a greater extent its capacities not only to resolve but also to prevent the emerging crises.

The two shared the opinion that the trend toward escalation of tension in international relations, the withdrawal from key agreements in the sphere of disarmament and the increased migratory flows cannot be overcome with unilateral action by any individual country and should not lead to erosion of the UN activity.
