President Rumen Radev Supported the Bulgarian Hauliers in a Letter to the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani

Head of State Rumen Radev sent a letter to the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani on the occasion of the problems related to the so-called Mobility Package 1.

“The Mobility Package 1 and the amendments of the existing directives provoked strong reactions in the past year. Discussions were held not only at the level of the affected member states, but also at the level of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The legal texts proposed as of today that should be voted are unfair to Bulgaria. The envisaged legislative amendments run counter to the foundations of the single European market and violate the principles of the free movement of goods, people, services and capitals within the Union,” the Bulgarian President said in his letter to Antonio Tajani.

In the view of Head of State Rumen Radev, the common approach adopted to the texts in the Mobility Package 1 and the envisaged measures discriminate the Bulgarian transport industry. “Bulgaria will suffer severe losses and will undergo a more serious economic lag from the rest member states. The heavy-freight automobile business in Bulgaria is essential to our country’s economy, in terms of both its contribution to the GDP and to employment,” Rumen Radev wrote.

In his letter, the Bulgarian Head of State says that he supports the demands of the Bulgarian hauliers. “I voice my support for their position. Their fair demands should be considered and the legislative proposals tabled by the Bulgarian side should be taken into account,” President Radev was adamant in his letter.

The Head of State voiced his conviction that the Mobility Package 1 should be finalized on the basis of fair and balanced decisions, respecting the EU’s fundamental principles and the proper functioning of the European Internal Market.
