President Iliana Iotova and Minister Hakan Fidan Discussed Improving Connectivity between Bulgaria and Turkiye and Ensuring Security in the Region

For projects aimed at improving connectivity between Bulgaria and Turkiye must be viewed as a whole, to be successful, and within the context of closer cooperation in Southeastern Europe. This will bolster both economic development and security in the region, whose strategic importance is growing. This was stated by President Iliana Iotova at a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who is on a formal visit to Bulgaria.

Minister Fidan was participating in the Summit of the South-East European Cooperation Process, which President Iotova hosted yesterday in Sofia. The interlocutors emphasised the importance of the forum and stressed that the initiative has a future. There was a shared view that the region’s development requires a long-term vision and the implementation of specific joint projects.

In the context of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, President Iotova and Minister Fidan identified improving connectivity and ensuring security as priority areas of reciprocal interest. The two highlighted the efforts of the two countries to ensure security in the Black Sea region.

President Iotova and Minister Fidan also noted that the disruption of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz prompts a need for alternative routes, which reinforces the strategic role of Southeastern Europe. Improving transport links between the two countries was also highlighted, including railway infrastructure and the ferry line between Burgas and Istanbul. Among the topics discussed were energy security and the diversification of supplies. The President pointed to the importance of the green energy corridor project, which will connect Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkiye, and Bulgaria, and from there, other countries in the region.

Iliana Iotova and Hakan Fidan highlighted the strong partnership in the field of defence. The head of state noted the involvement of Turkish companies in the “Hemus 2026” International Defence Equipment and Services Exhibition in Plovdiv. The two also laid stress on the prospects for strengthening investment and promoting contacts between businesses in both countries.
