The Head of State: Bulgaria Relies on UNESCO for Preserving and Popularizing Its Historical and Cultural Heritage

2017-12-05 14:30:00

At a meeting with the Director General of the organization Audrey Azul, President Radev called for a harmonious development of science and high technologies in Western and Eastern Europe

Bulgaria has a huge historical and cultural heritage and will continue to rely on UNESCO’s support for preserving and developing it and also for conducting archaeological excavations in our country. There are many things to be yet discovered, however funds are needed to this end. This is what President Rumen Radev told journalists after the meeting with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azul, which was held in the organization’s headquarters in Paris. The President added that the opportunity for providing international support to help our country incriminate the attempts to steal the Bulgarian historical heritage was discussed at the talks.

Rumen Radev and Audrey Azul also discussed the prospects for facilitating the access of the Bulgarian children to education. “UNESCO has implemented projects and we should work together to ensure that common European and world standards are maintained.  What we spoke about in support of education and science is completely in line with our idea for a harmonious development of science and high technologies not only in Western, but also in Eastern Europe,” the Head of State said.

The President further pointed out that the scholars from the Balkan countries have agreed on the idea that an international institute for sustainable development and a scientific center in which there is an accelerator for nuclear particles should be established with the help of CERN and it should integrate in a single place science, education and medicine. “We have a first draft on which we work hard. An interdepartmental group on the project was convened and created on my initiative. It includes Bulgarian scholars who work on establishing such a center and I hope that during the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, it will be tabled for discussion because it will really unite the Balkan countries,” Rumen Radev emphasized.

The Head of State added that the topic of the European integration of the Western Balkan countries cannot be exhausted only by implementing social projects or projects in the sphere of justice, transport, infrastructure and digital connectivity. “Integration is also necessary in the sphere of education and science and then we will be able to speak of a really comprehensive approach to the Western Balkans,” President Radev further told representatives of the Bulgarian media in Paris.

Later the Bulgarian Head of State will meet Angel Gurria, Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
