The procedure for selecting the Prosecutor-General must be legitimate and transparent

2012-06-29 14:00:00

The procedure for electing a new Prosecutor-General must be legitimate and transparent and based on objective rules and criteria, said President Rosen Plevneliev, who met today at 2 Dondoukov Boulevard with Supreme Judicial Council representative Anelia Mingova and chief inspector of the Inspectorate at the SJC, Anna Karaivanova. In this way, the President said, the next SJC would kick off with a high degree of public trust. The Presidential institution will play an active role and support the judiciary within its powers, the President said, adding that institutions should work in co-operation to produce more visible results.

SJC representative Mingova supported the idea that the new Prosecutor-General would be elected by the new Supreme Judicial Council. In terms of career opportunities for magistrates, Professor Mingova expressed belief that the work of the Supreme Judicial Council should not be a career obstacle to professional advancement of its members. “ The exercise of these powers in the SJC should be evaluated according to the law so as to allow that when SJC members reach the end of their terms of office, they make take up positions in the judiciary that are in accord with their professional and ethical attitude towards the performance of their duties,” Anelia Mingova said after meeting President Plevneliev.
