In the past years we have observed a dangerous process of delegitimization of institutions, parties, and unfortunately of the political system as a whole. Part of the reasons lie namely in the lost hope that every citizen is important, that everyone can change the state by voting and that democracy provides the citizen the opportunity to directly take part in decision-making. There is no stronger instrument to boost the public trust than the referendum!

Rosen Plevneliev and Federika Mogherini discussed issues related to regional and international cooperation, to the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkan countries, the conflicts in East Ukraine and the Middle East, the migration problem and the need for European solidarity and to energy security issues. The two shared the opinion that united and joint actions should be taken to overcome the challenges related to the migration pressure along the external EU borders. “We should show unity and solidarity to solve the problems caused by the migration flow,” Federika Mogherini said.

President Rosen Plevneliev awarded the Stara Planina medal first degree to US Ambassador to Bulgaria Marcie Ries for her contribution to strengthening and developing the friendly relations between Bulgaria and the US. The US diplomat presented her letters of credence on 1 October 2012 and her mandate will finish on 28 July 2015.

President Rosen Plevneliev discussed with Phil Hogan, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, at 2 Dondukov street today the ways to neutralize the negative effects on Bulgarian agriculture caused by the embargo imposed by the Russian Federation on the import of agricultural production from the EU.
