The President in New York: The Climate Change Agreement is a Clear Commitment of Every Society to Act so as to Serve the Interests of the Next Generations

2016-04-21 10:33:00

The signing of the Paris Climate Change Agreement is a historic event which will pave the way to the future of our societies by 2100. This is an agreement on the future of the planet, a clear commitment of every society and every country to act environmentally responsibly so as to serve the interests of the next generations. This is what Head of State Rosen Plevneliev said in New York, where he will take part in the High Level Thematic Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and in the official ceremony on signing the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

“Bulgaria should be one of the first countries to ratify the Agreement. In this way, we will show once again that we have a vision for the future and a will to be among the leading countries,” President Rosen Plevneliev commented on the occasion of the forthcoming official ceremony on signing the historic document to be held on 22 April.

Under conditions of a migration crisis, Bulgaria is one of the few countries strictly adhering to the rules, acting responsibly and protecting properly the external EU borders. “Although sometimes we are not aware of what our country has achieved, these efforts are highly appreciated in the US,” the Head of State said after holding talks with representatives of Jewish organizations in the US. "Bulgaria is becoming an ever more important factor in the EU because it offers solutions to the problems rather than causing them,” the President said at the meeting, highlighting our country as a factor of stability in the region and an example of a responsible approach.

Bulgaria's strategic partnership with the US and Israel were in the focus of the talks the Head of State held with the leaders of the Jewish community in the US. The President highly appreciated the performance of the five joint US-Bulgaria working groups, which has already yielded results in energy diversification, defense, cybersecurity and the rule of law.

“We also received a very clear sign about the support of Irina Bokova's nomination for UN Secretary-General. We are aware that the race will be difficult. However the Bulgarian institutions are mobilized,” Rosen Plevneliev further said.

On April 21, the Head of State will participate in a plenary session “Action at All Levels: National Implementation” of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and will deliver an address.

The official ceremony on signing the Paris Climate Change Agreement will be held in the UN General Assembly Hall on Friday, 22 April. President Rosen Plevneliev will sign the global Agreement on behalf of the Republic of Bulgaria and will deliver an address during the plenary session on climate changes.
