The Head of State: The Bulgarian Candidacy for UN Secretary-General Requires a Nationally-Responsible Effort

2016-04-23 10:54:00

In the UN headquarters in New York, President Rosen Plevneliev held talks with UNESCO secretary-general and the Republic of Bulgaria’s candidate for UN secretary-general. During the talks he held with leaders from the whole world, the leaders made a high assessment of Bulgaria and the work of Irina Bokova as secretary-general of UNESCO. “This means that we have opened a lot of doors in the world’s most important international institution. Bulgaria’s name is mentioned in positive contexts and this is a prerequisite for us to be even more ambitious and set high goals,” President Rosen Plevneliev commented. The two exchanged views on the course of the election campaign for a new UN secretary-general.

At the same time, the Head of State defined the election of a new UN secretary-general as the “most difficult forthcoming struggle.” The President and the government are part of a nationally responsible effort. We will work consistently to make this cause come true, the Head of State said.

Irina Bokova, the Bulgarian candidate for UN secretary-general, for her part, voiced her gratitude for the support. “The greatest honor for every candidate is to be together with the Head of State. The country’s support is a guarantee of success. Such a support is offered, and, given the ideas we exchanged about our future work, we can achieve success,” Irina Bokova expressed assurance.
