Bulgaria and Georgia are determined to strengthen their partnership in the economy and energy sector, by realizing their potential as transport and energy corridors between Europe and Asia. This was the opinion shared by President Rosen Plevneliev and Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, who held talks today in Munich, within the framework of the 52nd Munich Security Conference. Our country is the first destination among the EU member-states for export from Georgia. Although the bilateral trade was worth 537,1 million US dollars in 2014, the two countries have considerably greater abilities, it emerged at the meeting.
“The Black Sea should be a free-trade and cooperation zone and Bulgaria and Georgia can play an important role in developing the transport potential of the Black Sea region. By modernizing the ferry-boat lines from Burgas and Varna to Batumi and Poti, we will build a competitive transport infrastructure,” the Head of State emphasized.
The Georgian Prime Minister showed an interest in Bulgaria’s experience in building the transport infrastructure and reforming the water sector and highlighted that he is impressed by the progress Bulgaria has achieved in these sectors in recent years. President Plevneliev shared good practices and voiced our country’s readiness to ensure Georgia’s expert support.
“Georgia is Bulgaria’s important partner in our efforts to diversify the sources and routes of natural gas supply,” President Plevneliev emphasized at the meeting.
The Head of State voiced support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, and also for the country’s European and Euro-Atlantic prospects. Rosen Plevneliev also confirmed Bulgaria’s position on lifting the visa regime for Georgian citizens.
