2012-08-31 12:00:00

The Sofia Metro is a symbol of a modern and successful Bulgaria, President Rosen Plevneliev said at the opening ceremony of the second line of the subway, which was attended by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, ministers and others. The President compared the metro project to the building of Trakiya Motorway, which had a 45-year history and had been implemented only in recent years. "This is no accident, the success of this endeavour has proven our country’s capability to manage large projects fairly, transparently and according to the rules, President Plevneliev said.

The President underlined that the successful construction of the subway was a positive example that could be followed in the implementation of large national projects.

He expressed thanks to the European Commission and its President that even in times of severe global crisis, Bulgaria had the opportunity to implement its national priorities and projects that are essential not only for the region but also for the prosperity and development of Europe as a whole. The President thanked the designers, engineers and contractors involved in the construction of the second metro line in Sofia.
