Rosen Plevneliev: Ukraine will Seek a Solution to the Rights of the Minorities in Line with the European Values

2014-06-04 15:40:00
President Rosen Plevneliev will visit Ukraine soon, it became clear after the Head of State held a meeting with the newly-elected President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. The two presidents held talks within the top-level forum in Warsaw, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the democratic changes in Central and Eastern Europe.

Petro Poroshenko assumed the commitment in front of the Bulgarian Head of State that after his inauguration as president of Ukraine “he will seriously address the rights of the Bulgarians in the country and will seek a solution based on the European values and standards.” Petro Poroshenko is closely related to the Bulgarian community in Ukraine. He ended his election campaign in Bolgrad and he harbors very warm feelings towards the Bulgarians,” President Rosen Plevneliev told journalists in the Polish capital.

At the meeting the two presidents discussed the situation in Ukraine. “In the 21st century we should work to ensure stability and build up trust and tension should not be provoked in neighboring countries,” the Head of State commented. In Rosen Plevneliev’s opinion, the crisis in Ukraine makes it necessary for the world and Europe to speak in one voice. “The danger of imposing sanctions has not passed yet and if Russia fails to recognize the conducted legitimate elections in Ukraine and continues to destabilize regions in the country, it is possible that a third new phase of imposing sanctions will be entered, including economic ones,” the President said.

Rosen Plevneliev was adamant that if such a situation arises, Bulgaria should live up to its responsibility, as a worthy EU member state.  “We should help Russia work to gain trust and observe the rules of the international legal order,” the Head of State emphasized. The President further said that the EU should not tolerate an attitude of “aggressively imposing a new order based on the exercise of power and the non-observance of international norms.”
