The oligarchic dependencies may be easily overcome without convening a Great National Assembly. This is what President Rosen Plevneliev told journalists regarding the calls for convening a Great National Assembly. The Head of State called on the people to avoid hasty decisions and emphasized that before doing so a consensus must be reached on what amendments of the constitution should be made. “Currently Bulgarian laws are European and obeying them, observing the rules and ensuring an efficient law-administration system do not depend on a Great National Assembly,” Rosen Plevneliev emphasized.

“It will take at least two years of hard work to come up with the precise texts, to make clear corrections of the Constitution and reach a consensus on them, before a Great National Assembly is convened. We should be aware that a Great National Assembly means 400 assembly deputies who will not be given a limited time to work. Unless the Great National Assembly is well-prepared, the state will be plunged into chaos,” Rosen Plevneliev commented. The Head of State was adamant that a presidential republic is not a good option for Bulgaria.

As for the petition launched for starting an impeachment procedure, the President pointed out that the political system in Bulgaria and in the EU is based on political pluralism and on the right of every citizen and political entity to set up initiatives, to make assessments and to freely express their will. “I respect this right. However I believe and hope that the people who will sign this petition have above all not succumbed to the propaganda of one party or another, but have read my statement and will then make their assessment. My actions showed that I am independent,” President Plevneliev added. He recalled that he supported the referendum held at the beginning of the year for building a second nuclear power plant on the Belene platform and he also supported the public protests in February. Criticism was leveled at the President when he appointed the caretaker government as well. “The fact that the president is independent is no news. However I hope that the citizens understand that on Friday I mainly called on the politicians to avoid boycotting the people’s voice and dividing the people, but work for ensuring unity instead. The many criticisms that followed mean that my call has been heard,” Rosen Plevneliev emphasized.

The ambassadors of the EU member states are part of our family and their voice is important, the president commented with respect to the joint position voiced by the ambassadors of the German Federal Republic and the French Republic regarding the situation in Bulgaria. “They are Bulgaria’s great friends and instead of making superficial assessments, we should rather hear their voice,” the Head of State pointed out. The basis of each EU member state is the independent media, law administration system that ensures justice for those who observe the rules, not for the strong of the day and a market economy, not an oligarchic one. This must also be the sound foundation of the Bulgarian society and this is explicitly mentioned not only in the statement I made, but also in positions voiced by the ambassadors, President Rosen Plevneliev further added.

The Head of State visited the National Guards Unit to mark 134 years since it was established and the day of the Bulgarian guardsmen.
