Rosen Plevneliev: The solution of the current crisis is not in conducting a revolution, but in making correct steps in the correct direction

The solution of the current crisis is not in conducting a revolution, but in making consistent correct steps in the correct direction. This is what President Rosen Plevneliev said at a meeting he held with the famous Polish economist Leshek Balcerovich, who is on a visit to Bulgaria. Although the political parties need “a pressure exerted from the opposite side,” the demands put forward should be concrete and precisely formulated. This is what was emphasized at the meeting. However, there is no consensus and dialogue in Bulgaria, the Head of State said.

President Plevneliev and Professor Balcerovich exchanged opinions on the social and political situation in Bulgaria, as well as on the economic processes in our country and Europe. The political instability has a demotivating impact on the entrepreneurs and the institutions and local authorities should take more active measures to support the business, the Head of State said. He emphasized that the crisis in Bulgaria is not economic, the macroeconomic indicators are stable and this is the result not simply of the strict fiscal policy, but also of the created culture of stability under the conditions of a currency board.

According to Professor Balcerovich, namely the currency board, the stable bank system and the low public debt are among Bulgaria’s great achievements. “It is not easy to achieve such stability,” the economist added and said that thanks to the measures the Bulgarian Central Bank took in 2007, Bulgaria avoided the “Irish scenario.” However, the problems of the European countries are national and they require national solutions and the governments in Europe have come to understand this fact better,  Leshek Balcerovich further commented.
