Rosen Plevneliev: The referendum is a great success for democracy in Bulgaria

2013-01-27 11:00:00

“Irrespective of how many people come out to vote and whatever the result of the referendum, it is a great success for democracy in Bulgaria,” President Rosen Plevneliev said after voting in the first referendum in the democratic history of Bulgaria.

The President reiterated his position in support of the referendum as the highest form of direct democracy. “The fact that, after 22 years of transition from a totalitarian regime to democracy, we have achieved a new level of political maturity in which it is possible to organise a referendum, is a great success for Bulgaria,” President Plevneliev underlined.

The head of state expressed confidence that the referendum would motivate more Bulgarian citizens to take a position and to defend it. “My wish is that this is not the last referendum during my term in office,” President Plevneliev told journalists.
