President Rosen Plevneliev called on the students from the American University in Blagoevgrad for a new phase of democratic consolidation which can be achieved by strengthening the civil society in Bulgaria. In a lecture entitled “For a better future: who should take the initiative?”, the Head of State said that in Bulgaria further efforts should be put into strengthening the rule of law, of the independent and objective media, of market economy and the public institutions.

The civil war in Syria has been going on for already a third year in a row. The bloodshed claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people and million of Syrians were expelled from their homes. A proud people with a rich history and culture currently experiences hardship and pain. The inflow of refugees from Syria has been provoked by a conflict that destroys millions of human fates. People escaping from the evil of war are coming over to Bulgaria.

The major topics that President Rosen Plevneliev and President Petar Stoyanov (1997-2002) and the National Assembly speakers since the onset of the transition period on 10 November 1989 discussed at their meeting were overcoming the division in society, the escalation of hatred and the serious confrontation and interpersonal wars between politicians. The people who accepted the Head of State’s invitation were Alexander Yordanov, academician Blagovest Sendov, Yordan Sokolov, professor Ognyan Gerdzhikov, Borislav Velikov, Georgi Pirinski and Tsetska Tsacheva.
