Religion was one of the basic enemies of the totalitarian state and the people who refused to give up religion were subjected to persecution. Despite all attempts a lot of bold Bulgarian citizens did not give in and did not give up their faith and the right to freely profess their religion. This is what President Rosen Plevneliev said at the opening ceremony of the monument of St. Pope John Paul II in the town of Belene, where the Apostolic Nuncio Monsignore Anselmo Guido Pekorari was in Bulgaria.

In 1989 we thought that it would take only a couple of years for us to become a “normal state” – then we practically failed to realize that the institutions in a democratic state should not only be installed, but should also work efficiently. President Rosen Plevneliev signed a decree whereby he proposes to the 43rd National Assembly to vote for Boyko Borisov for prime minister, after the leader of the biggest parliamentary group handed down to the Head of State a successfully completed exploratory mandate for forming a government.
