The ideas for the EU’s development and the danger of Europe’s fragmentation were discussed by President Rumen Radev and the Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Riga. The two talked about the prospects for expanding the bilateral cooperation between Bulgaria and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Bulgaria and Portugal share a common position in the debate on the future of the EU which should reaffirm itself as a community promoting growth, employment, social and economic integration. At a meeting held in Riga Presidents Rumen Radev and Marcelo Rebelo de Suosa held talks within the meeting of the Heads of State of the Arraiolos group. The two noted that overcoming the differences in the development of the “old” and “new” EU member states is an important condition for strengthening the unity of the Union.

The EU needs a much more efficient decision making mechanism, particularly in critical situations. More often than not the crises have already become a fact and we manage to reach consensus on a decision in Europe in a year’s time. This is what Head of State Rumen Radev said at the meeting of the Heads of State of the Arraiolos group, which is underway in the capital of Latvia, Riga.

The countries along the external EU borders such as Bulgaria and Italy need solidarity and active support from their partners vis-à-vis migration. This was the common stance shared by Presidents Rumen Radev and Sergio Mattarella in Riga. The two were unanimous that without a common European approach this problem will continue to divide the EU member states.
