The realization of long-term priorities in education and science should lead to the creation of a new middle class capable of adaptation, which meets the needs of the national economy. This was said by President Rosen Plevneliev, who opened at 2 Dondoukov Boulevard the first meeting of the Council on Education and Science. The realization of the potential of the individual must become a national cause, the President told participants in the Council meeting, adding that in Bulgarian society there is consensus on this issue.

Welcome again to the Presidency. Today's topic, simply put, is “Bulgaria 2020 - national priorities in education and science”. If Bulgaria wants to develop, it must position itself on the path of ideas. In the 21st century, the most powerful tool of production is human knowledge. The theme of this task, namely – “Bulgaria 2020 Vision - national priorities in science and education” is a logical continuation of the debate that started in the past few months in the Presidential institution. The focus there has been on issues of economic development and competitiveness and priority targeting of investment.

This is the way to achieve a better balance between measures to curb spending and to promote economic growth, President Rosen Plevneliev said in an interview with CNN World Report, broadcast on May 26. To make progress, first you must have stability, the President said. In his words, Bulgaria's macro-economic stability achieved in recent years is the basis for sustainable growth. However, it is the result of much effort and structural reforms.

During his visit to Italy, President Rosen Plevneliev spoke for more than an hour with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti. Bulgaria and Italy have very similar long-term priorities and share the necessary measures to overcome the crisis in Europe. These include carrying out the necessary structural reforms, implementing programmes to reduce youth unemployment in Europe, to support innovation and small and medium enterprises.
