Relations between Bulgaria and France are excellent both in terms of economic co-operation and of culture, but the two countries have further potential to develop and deepen them, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and his French counterpart Francois Hollande agreed during a meeting in Paris during President Plevneliev’s visit to France.

In the referendum, politicians should have heard the voice of the citizens, and not explained against whom the referendum was directed. This was President Rosen Plevneliev’s comment to journalists in Paris. Speaking to Bulgarian journalists in the French capital, the President was adamant the results of the public consultation should not be politicised.

In Europe, not enough is known about what Bulgaria did to save Bulgarian Jews, President Rosen Plevneliev told Bulgarian journalists in Paris. “This was a unique feat by the Bulgarian people and a true expression of Bulgarian civil society. My greatest ambition is to show it in a dignified way to the world,” said the President, who is on his first working visit abroad since the beginning of the year.

“Irrespective of how many people come out to vote and whatever the result of the referendum, it is a great success for democracy in Bulgaria,” President Rosen Plevneliev said after voting in the first referendum in the democratic history of Bulgaria.
