Bulgaria and Estonia share common positions and interests regarding the EU cohesion policy, the measures for encouraging innovations as well as the liberalization of the energy markets and the diversification of the energy sources in compliance with the requirements of the EU Third Liberalization Energy Package. These were the main topics discussed in the talks held between Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and his Estonian counterpart Toomas Ilves during the first day of the Bulgarian Head of State’s visit to Tallinn.

Although today there are still different interpretations of the attitude of Bulgarian politicians to the crisis in Syria, there should be a unified position in Bulgaria on this issue. Such a position can be shaped in Parliament. This is what President Rosen Plevneliev told journalists today, after he opened the 11th international conference “Security in South-East Europe – seeking intelligent solutions”.

The budgets of the institutions in the Security and Defense sectors, which are limited due to the economic crisis, may have negative consequences for the security of the citizens in a long-term perspective. “Therefore I call on everyone to adhere to the decisions planned in the White Book on Defense and Armed Forces and to secure the necessary funding worth not less than 1.5 percent of the GDP allocated to security and defense.” This is what President Rosen Plevneliev told the participants in the 11th international conference “Security in South-East Europe – seeking intelligent solutions.”

A broad debate in Parliament on the situation in Syria is necessary, declared today President Rosen Plevneliev in response to a question by a journalist. The crisis in Syria is not only regional, but can turn into a global one. The Head of State expressed his strong view that holding a parliamentary debate on such an important topic is the approach followed by Bulgaria’s partners in the EU and NATO.
